Description
The Kennels at Talacre Abbey is a 4-storey house and mill located on a steep site. The house, which has 2 storeys, faces south towards the track, while the mill below it also has 2 storeys and faces north towards lower ground where there is a courtyard with kennels. The north side of the building is polygonal, and the cottage is slightly set back. Constructed from snecked rubble stone, it features lintelled openings and a graded slate roof with a central paired stone stack.
The front of the house includes a doorway and flanking windows, all boarded up, beneath hood moulds that are connected by a string course and positioned below the level of the track. In the upper storey, there is a single central window with a hood mould. The rear of the house has 2-light casements on each side in the lower storey, and in the upper storey, there are alternating 2-light casements and blind windows.
The mill below has two doorways on each side wall and windows on each facet in its lower storey, all of which are boarded up. The upper storey features small windows in its side walls.
The courtyard has a polygonal north side that aligns with the mill's plan and includes retaining walls flanking both the mill and the cottage. On each side of the courtyard are two former kennels, with the northwest kennel retaining a corrugated iron roof, while the others are roofless, and the southeast kennel is in ruins and overgrown. A gateway is located in the north facet, and on the southwest side, there are stone steps leading from the track above.
