Description
The riding school and stable at Talacre Abbey is a notable structure featuring a three-stage central octagonal tower surrounded by a single-storey outer octagon. Constructed from ashlar with a slate roof, the outer octagon's roof is hidden behind a parapet with moulded coping, while the central tower boasts an embattled parapet and a wooden cupola with slatted openings and a weathervane. The upper stage of the tower includes three-light windows with hexagonal and diamond panes, alternating with blind windows. The outer octagon has a doorway with a wood-mullioned overlight facing the northeast towards the house. Other sides of the outer octagon feature a variety of openings, including a four-light window with wooden mullions, several doorways with three-pane overlights, double stable doors, and a window with missing mullions supported by blockwork piers for a small water tank.
Inside the central tower, there are three doorways, one of which is blocked and has a segmental head. The other sides contain blocked former openings in chamfered surrounds, with two retaining iron bars that once fed mangers, which still exist just inside the openings. A wooden tethering post is centrally located in the lower stage, while the upper stage features a brick inner wall with nesting holes and stone ledges.
The outer octagon's roof is supported by posts and raking struts, all secured with iron bolts. The outer wall contains round-backed niches, and inserted brick cross walls have divided the outer projection into three units, which include machine bases in the floor.
