Description

Abbey Mill and the attached cottage, located in Rosedale Abbey, are a cornmill and cottage that are currently used for storage. The mill was rebuilt in 1853, replacing an earlier structure, and the cottage was partly rebuilt around 1982. The 19th-century rebuilding was carried out by George Wilson. The mill features hammer-dressed sandstone, incorporating some herringbone-tooled sandstone, and has a pantile roof, while the cottage has a concrete pantile roof.

The mill is designed as a bridge-type mill with a high breast wheel and consists of two storeys and an attic, presenting a two-window front. The attached cottage, located to the right, has a single-storey, four-bay front. The mill has a plank stable door to the right, a two-light window opening to the left of the door, and two shuttered openings further left, with the end one serving as an inspection hole for the wheel chamber. There is a two-light window on the first floor to the right, with a smaller square opening to the left, and two small square shuttered openings in the attic. The door and window lintels are vertically tooled, with the door lintel featuring an untooled shaped panel inscribed with "GEORGE WILSON 1853," and above it, a reset datestone reading "FC 1667." The mill has coped gables and shaped kneelers, with a stack at the left end.

At the rear, there is a blocked wheel chamber opening to the right, situated between the ground and first floors, and a board lifting door to the left leading to the first floor. Both floors on the left end have two-light, 12-pane horizontal-sliding sashes, and the attic has two square shuttered openings. The cottage features a panelled door to the right of centre and two large-pane horizontal-sliding sashes, all with renewed lintels and sills. The cottage also has a coped gable to the right and an end stack on the right.
