Description
Waterhouse Well, also known locally as Monks Well, is a covered well located in Rosedale Abbey. It is likely of medieval origin but was rebuilt in the 20th century. The well is constructed from herringbone-tooled sandstone and has a rectangular shape, built into sloping ground. There is a rectangular doorway on the south side, which features a trapezoid lintel and is accessed by a flight of steps. A small slit is present at ground level on the north side. The well has a pitched roof, which is flattened at the top and made of three stone slabs. Inside, there is a rough stone seat against the north wall, and a stone water channel protrudes from the east wall. Water is drained through a hole in the stone flag floor.
