Description

Ana Cross is an early 19th-century waymarker cross made of diagonally-tooled gritstone. It features a square section cross that stands on a rectangular base formed from two massive stones clamped together. The cross is approximately 3 metres high, with the head carved from a single separate block. This 19th-century cross replaced the medieval Ain Howe cross, the head of which is now located in the crypt of the Church of St Mary in Lastingham. The Ain Howe cross, similar to the Victoria cross on Lidsty Hill in Spaunton, is believed to have served as a sanctuary cross for that church.
