Description

The Edith Bankes Memorial Institute is a civic building influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement, featuring a symmetrical plan. It consists of a single range with lower aligned sections at the front and rear, and additional low sections at right angles to these. The building is constructed of red brick and has steeply pitched slate roofs, a plinth, and a moulded eaves cornice. A prominent domed bell cupola is located at the center of the main range.

The windows are small-pane wooden designs, positioned either under the eaves or featuring brick hoodmoulds, and they have decorative tile sills. The entrance is located on the south gable end of the front range, featuring a round-arched doorcase made of moulded brick, which contains double-panelled doors set within a square stone surround inscribed with 'The Edith Bankes Memorial Institute'. Above the entrance is an overlight protected by iron bars in a geometric pattern. The entrance is flanked by small 4-pane windows.

The west side of the front range has two windows, with a 4-pane window on the left and a 2-light 4-pane window on the right. The east side has a symmetrical arrangement of windows. Each side of the main range has five windows, separated by slightly curved brick buttresses. The central three windows are tall and rise above the eaves, topped with hipped gablets. Each of these is a 2-light window with horizontal glazing bars and small panes, flanked by 2-light 4-pane windows.

The low projecting ranges at right angles to the rear each feature a 2-light 4-pane window at the gable end. The west range includes a brick ridge stack and a wooden door with a traceried glazed panel to the right of the front. The east range has a similar door and a 3-light 4-pane window to the right. Behind these ranges, the rear range has a gabled dormer on the west side, but the rest of the structure was not visible at the time of inspection. Access to the interior was not available during the inspection.
