Description

The former bier-house at St Mary's Church is a 19th-century structure that is single storey and features a modern mono-pitch corrugated iron roof. The building is constructed of rubble with a brick entrance face on the west side. Above a modern boarded door, there is a large dressed stone lintel that has fielded panel decoration, which has been re-used. The north side of the bier-house has two blocked ventilation slits.

Adjacent to the bier-house are the south churchyard gates, which were built during the restoration by George Gilbert Scott between 1882 and 1884. These gates feature plain sandstone gate-piers topped with conical caps, and iron gates that have simple fleurs-de-lis and arrow decorations. Next to the gates, there is a rubble retaining wall that supports the churchyard, which follows the road around to the northwest. Here, there is a small pedestrian gate with plain gate-piers that match the style of the main gates. The wall continues along the west and southwest sides of the church, enclosing the old churchyard in a rough L shape, and it terminates at the junction with the rear wall of the northern agricultural range of Plas yn Llan. The later cemetery walls to the west are not included in this description.
