Description
Derwen Hall is a large two-storeyed house comprising a main range facing south-east and a secondary range at right angles, stepped slightly downwards, joined corner to corner with the main range. The upper storey of the main range has a decorative timber-framed front elevation with three regularly spaced windows. The timber framing features large square panels with three diagonal braces forming lozenges or chevrons. Remnants of original pierced panelling survive below the upper-storey windows, indicating the original windows were wider and shorter. Below this, the masonry of the ground storey has three differently spaced windows and a main doorway off-centre to the right. The other sides of the main range are in stone, with a rendered gable end to the left and a jettied staircase enclosure at the rear; the other gable end is also rendered. The front elevation features 18th-century 12-pane hornless sash windows, both above and below. A six-panel main door with a batwing fanlight is present.
The secondary wing is in utilitarian timber framing, with small top braces; numerous members are missing and it’s now mostly infilled with brick. The main elevation of this wing, facing south-west, has 19th-century mullion-and-transom windows, four above and three below. The right gable is also timber-framed, with the upper storey and roof gable in square panels, and the lower storey rebuilt in modern brickwork. A full-length lean-to extension with a catslide roof has been added to the north-east side, and is rendered.
Inside the main range, the main room to the west has a dragon beam and large beams and joists with stepped tongued stops. A later partition between this room and the entrance lobby includes a late 18th-century oak six-panel door. The main front door is similarly styled. A main beam at the rear was cut to accommodate an 18th-century staircase, which has been recently re-assembled.
The wing contains a large kitchen with double longitudinal beams and a large fireplace with a bread oven on the left. A door off this kitchen is painted with the word ‘dairy’.
