Description

This is a six-window building, likely dating from the 18th century, and originally comprising numbers 1, 1a, and 1b. The front elevation is rendered with some incised detail, featuring broad end pilaster strips and a band course on the first two properties. It has a tall, hipped slate roof with a central brick chimney stack and coved cornice eaves, punctuated by four dormers with modern windows. The upper floors retain Georgian 12-pane sash windows.

The ground floor has been altered with modern shop fronts and doors, with a particularly elaborate console bracketed hood incorporating a panelled soffit on the left-hand end. The rear elevation is of brick, steeply gabled, and includes extensions and a lean-to addition. Small-pane sash windows are retained at the rear of numbers 1 and 1a, while number 1b has modern windows.

Inside number 1, much of the original structure remains, including the roof trusses and an 18th-century staircase with turned balusters and a swept handrail with a wave profile. There are also panelled doors. A fireplace in the basement to the rear has a unique detail: a lintel with stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops.
