Description

This is an 18th-century building of stucco construction, originally comprising numbers 2 and 4 West Street. It has a hipped tile roof, with stone slates above the eaves, and red brick stacks. The building is two storeys high with an attic, and features a brick modillion eaves cornice.

The south elevation presents two ranges of cased sash windows. There are three blocked windows on the first floor. One bay window features sashes and glazing bars, topped with an entablature and an idiosyncratic cornice. The left-hand door has six moulded panels and a semi-circular fanlight. The right-hand door is modern but set within original moulded panelled reveals and includes a semi-circular fanlight. The doorcase has reeded pilasters and a Doric entablature topped with an open dentilled pediment. Two attic dormers are visible, both with hipped tile roofs and tile-hung cheeks; one has a casement with leaded glazing bars, the other a sash window.

The east elevation contains a 19th-century shopfront with pilasters to the fascia, flanked by elaborately moulded consoles. Above the shopfront, there are three cased sash windows with glazing bars on the first floor, and one attic dormer with a hipped tile roof and tile-hung cheeks.

The building is part of a group that includes the Red Lion Hotel and numbers 2 to 12 (even) West Street.
