Description

The Red Lion Public House is a two-storey building with a roughcast front featuring four windows. It has a plinth, a cill-band on the first floor, and a brick eaves band. The roof is covered with renewed slate, and there is a brick gable parapet, likely renewed, at the right end, which includes a quarter round kneeler. The building has rendered chimney stacks. The windows are irregularly spaced, with two attic dormers that have hipped roofs and small pane casements. The first floor has 12-pane windows, with a fixed window on the left and a sash window on the right, both nearly flush with the frames. There is also an earlier small two-light window further to the right. The porch, which is offset to the left, features the lettering 'The Red Lion' and has an imitation crenellated parapet with a large red lion above rounded edges, leading to an arched entrance with a modern door. On the ground floor, there is a small pane sash window to the right of the porch, where the glazing bars have been removed from the lower sash. To the right, a former doorway with a cambered head has been blocked, and a small-pane fixed window has been inserted. There is a one-bay cross range that projects forward to the left, displaying similar architectural details.

The right gable end retains a massive chimney breast with a wraparound bandcourse, which is also present on the left end. There is a modern extension to the right and a lower rendered cross range.

Inside, the building retains some stop-chamfered beams and boarded doors in the bar area. The first floor is noted to have been used as a theatre in the late 18th century to early 19th century, with a programme dated 1806 still retained.
