Description

Ty Brazier is a 2-unit house from the 17th century, facing south-west. It features a lobby entrance and a gabled crosswing on the left that extends to provide an additional room at the rear. Although the house was originally completely rendered, much of this has been removed recently to reveal the timber framing, which includes substantial close-set vertical timbers that are corner-braced at the top. The right gable remains concealed on the outside, but inside it reveals diagonal square panels. The house has a slate roof and a central brick chimney, with modern doors and windows.

The main entrance is through the lobby, which has chamfered and stopped joists. This lobby is now open to the hall on the left, while the doorway to the parlour on the right has been blocked off. The blocked doorway is still visible from the parlour side, featuring a lintel soffit that is pointed in a Tudor style. A large central chimney serves a big hearth in the hall and a smaller hearth in the parlour.

The hall consists of 2 structural bays, separated by a massive chamfered main beam, with flat-laid joists. There is a blocked opening at the rear of the hall that reaches the ceiling, featuring an ovolo moulding, possibly indicating the original position of the stairs. Modern stairs are now located in the left unit. The roof timbering above is plain and currently visible.

The parlour unit on the right also has 2 bays, with a massive beam that is decorated with chamfers and tongue-stops. The joists in this unit are flat-laid and chamfered with similar stops. Upstairs, the mid truss features a lap-dovetailed collar beam design, with shaped struts above and chamfers below, indicating that it was meant to be seen.
