Description
Acremans is a house that likely dates back to the 16th century, although all dateable details are from the 17th century. It is timber-framed and plastered, featuring an old red tiled roof that is gabled to the east and half-hipped to the west. The house is a three-unit lobby entry structure with two storeys, facing north, and has a stair tower on the south side next to the chimney. There is a 19th-century lean-to extension along the rear wall that is roofed uniformly with the stair tower. A small 19th-century gabled porch is present, along with a pleasant single-storey southwest rear extension that has a low pitched copper roof designed by Bruce Martin in 1966.
The north front has much of the lower floor rebuilt in painted red brick, and there is a small two-storey 19th-century canted bay window for the hall and the chamber above. A striking tall central chimney features three conjoined diagonal shafts. Inside, the parlour to the left of the door has a chamfered and stopped cross beam and a wide 17th-century three-centred fireplace that is chamfered and plastered. The hall contains a chamfered and stopped axial beam and an early 18th-century corner cupboard with a hemicycle top, shaped shelves, and raised and fielded lower doors. The unheated west room has exposed joists and a moulded axial beam, with the floor elevated well above ground level. Acremans forms a group with its farm buildings to the northwest.
