Description

House. Likely dating to the late 15th or early 16th century, possibly around 1513, when the manor of Joyces was sold to Henry Patmore. The house was largely rebuilt in the mid-to-late 17th century, with a southwest wing probably added after 1910. It is a small, L-shaped, two-storey timber-framed manor house facing east. The front is plastered with weatherboard detailing and has an old red tile hipped roof. The southwest wing is plastered, featuring two panels of fan pargetting flanking its west side chimney, and has a gabled, tiled roof. A single-storey tiled lean-to is located at the rear (west). Evidence of smoke blackening on the south side of the roof and tension bracing in the east wall of the first floor remain, suggesting the house was originally a simple rectangle open to the roof. A floor was inserted in the 17th century. The staircase is housed in a shallow west extension of the south room. Back-to-back fireplaces are on the ground floor, and a fine, four-centred arched fireplace is present in the north inner chamber above. This upper room has a cranked tie beam and exposed timbers with swept jowled posts. Two windows are in the east front, with a central door positioned under a moulded flat canopy supported by moulded consoles. A fine central chimney is built to resemble three engaged square shafts arranged diagonally. This is a small house of manorial status and demonstrates the 17th-century changes in domestic interiors. It forms part of a group of historic buildings around the green.
