Description
Vineyard Cottage is a house dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. It is a small timber-framed building with plastered walls, situated on the east side of Bury Green in Little Hadham. The cottage features a black painted plinth and has a steep thatched half-hipped roof, which includes two 2-light dormers on the front wall plate. There is a small modern brick and tile porch and 2-light 19th-century casement windows. A single-storey rear projection, built around 1960, has a flat roof.
The layout includes a central chimney plan with a winding stair located at the rear of the stack. The entrance now leads into a parlour. The larger southern part of the cottage was originally an open hall, which had a floor inserted in the 17th century when the chimney was constructed, and the northern end was rebuilt. The roof features very steep clasped purlins. Inside, there is a fine inserted cross beam in the hall that is chamfered with ogee and bar stops, along with a wide brick fireplace that has two small cusped recesses. The northern part contains a chamfered and stopped axial beam supported on a faceted corbel, and there is a similar chamfered and stopped cross beam near the chimney, which is also chamfered on its back edge and rests on a moulded shouldered post to the east, resembling one found in The Bury, Bury Green. It is likely that the original service rooms extended to the south.
