Description
House. It likely dates back to the 16th century or earlier, with additions made later in time at each end. The house is timber-framed and plastered, with its main face looking west. It has a high thatched roof shaped into hips at each end. The house has one and a half storeys, with four casement dormers along the front wall plate.
The older southern half exhibits heavy close studding to the framed cross wall at the upper (northern) end of what was originally an open hall. It also features low side walls in the southern bay and a smoke-blackened roof with clasped purlins. A head mortise is visible for a two-light diamond mullioned window in the southern bay, below the end wall plate which was notched to accommodate a hipped roof.
The side walls of the hall were rebuilt to a greater height, incorporating a clasped purlin roof and a large central chimney stack inserted at the lower end of the hall, during the late 16th or early 17th century. The northern half was rebuilt, with an upper floor and dormers added throughout, and hipped end extensions in the 17th or early 18th century. It was subsequently divided with new central chimneys. The building is now a single house. It appears on Clintons Estate map of 1588. It is an important example of timber framing, demonstrating a transition towards permanent house construction.
