Description

Middle Scafell is originally a three-unit lobby entry farmhouse with a parlour in a cross wing to the right, and a hall and service rooms to the left. It is currently divided into two houses.

The building dates to the 17th century and is constructed of a two-storey and attic box frame. The frame has close studding with a mid-rail and corner braces to the ground floor, set against a brick nogging. The building is covered by a steeply pitched, modern slate roof with deep verges, 19th-century sinuous bargeboards, and finials. A modern, squat brick stack sits centrally, and there is decorative framing of quatrefoils to the jettied attic of the cross wing, supported by roll-moulded brackets. Broad, modern windows are spaced differently on the hall and cross wing elevations. A modern gabled entrance porch has been built over the location of the original front door, and there are glazed inner doors.

The right-hand end elevation consists of square panels with brick nogging and modern windows and a cut doorway. A later, 18th-century gabled extension projects from the rear of the cross wing, incorporating lighter framing, brick nogging, and modern windows. The left-hand end elevation is clad in corrugated iron above a brick plinth. The rear elevation is of brick, painted black and white.

Internally, the former hall retains axial, stop-chamfered ceiling beams. The parlour has a good ceiling framed three ways with deep stop chamfers and roll-moulded wall brackets. A similar ceiling is present in the chamber above. The central stack and staircase have been removed.
