Description
These stables and coach house stand at Milford Hall, Newtown, and date from the 1840s. The main stable block is a two-story building constructed of Flemish bond brickwork. It features an octagonal timber cupola and a gabled slate roof with sinuous barge boards and finials. A central gable contains a Victorian sash window, and the eaves have a saw-toothed cornice. The building was later converted into a cottage, but it retains a circular pitching eye on the right side, overlooking small-paned sashes set in what were formerly doorways.
Attached at a right angle to the right is an earlier 19th-century timber-framed coach house and stable range. This has gently pitched slate roofs and is clad in lap boarding, resting on a brick plinth. It has plank doors fitted with iron strap hinges.
Brick boundary walls sweep inwards, creating an entry to a yard. Nearby, Little Milford, to the northwest, was formerly used as a magistrates’ court.
