Description
The barn at Ysgafell is a 16th-century, six-bay, cruck-framed cowhouse that has been lofted. The front and side end walls are made of painted brick, while the rear elevation is timber framed and has undergone significant alterations. It features a steeply pitched, hipped slate roof with oversailing eaves. The barn has modern agricultural windows and plank doors.
Inside, there are five cruck trusses, with blades cut below the elbow to rest on the wallhead at the front. The through purlin collared full crucks have bow blades that are tennoned. The tie beams are secondary, and the original lower tie beams have been removed. The barn likely dates from the 17th century, coinciding with the insertion of the loft, and it originally had partitions and loft divisions, which have since been removed on the ground floor. The building may have originally been constructed as a barn.
