Description
Coed-y-foel is a restored single-storey thatched house constructed from rubble stonework, which is informally rendered or thickly whitewashed. The south-east end features battered, rougher plinth stonework. The entrance is nearly centrally located on the north-east side, flanked by three windows, two of which are modern, while the middle one originally served as a doorway. To the right of the entrance, there are two windows, one of which has been significantly enlarged. A thatched porch has been added, and at the rear (south-west), there are double modern French doors along with four irregularly placed windows.
The thatch, which was originally plain, has been fully restored and now features decorative laced ridging, with a dormer at the front and four dormers at the rear. The short chimney stack at the apex has been rebuilt.
The house consists of four bays and was originally a single storey, but now includes an upper floor throughout. All four surviving cruck trusses are exposed internally.
The layout includes a centrally located hall unit with a service unit downslope to the left and two inner rooms to the right. The hall and service units contain later fireplaces that are back-to-back, sharing a chimney. At the upper end of the hall is a fine post-and-panel partition with moulded arrisses, which features twin doorways leading to the inner rooms. A similar partition, lacking the moulded arrisses, separates the inner rooms longitudinally; one post from this partition has been removed to create a doorway between the rooms and to close one of the doorways from the hall.
