Description
Pentrefelin Bridge, also known as Llangollen Canal Bridge No 48, is a 19th-century single span bridge featuring an elliptical arch design, characteristic of Thomas Telford's work. The bridge is constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings. The voussoirs and keystone are complemented by a stringcourse that runs above the parapets, which slope gently downwards to the south. The bridge curves back at both ends, leading to ramps that descend to the towpath on the south side, where they end in slight pilasters topped with pyramidal caps, although the eastern one is broken. The abutments at the base are slightly battered. On the south side, the road running east is supported by a mudstone retaining wall that slopes down to about 2 meters above the towpath. This wall has been raised and extended to the west, ending in a coped rectangular pier. An oval cast iron plate on the eastern side displays the number 48.
