Description
The Old Armoury is a two-storey building constructed of rubble laid in courses of diminishing sizes, featuring a plinth and heavily tooled freestone dressings. It has a slate roof with end chimney stacks. Historical photographs reveal that there was once a raised clerestory at the center, and the gable parapets are supported by stone kneelers. The building has multipane mullioned windows with architraves.
Facing Victoria Square, there is a three-light window above the main entrance, which has a bracket-sided panel between it and a small panel above a boarded and studded door. On the Berwyn Street side, there are two windows: a two-light window on the first floor and a barred window on the ground floor. Slightly set back is the one-window section of the Old Armoury, which features a stringcourse at the midpoint of the first floor and a one-light small pane casement above a plain shop front. The Hall Street elevation is similar, with the one-window section also set back, a two-light window on the ground floor, and a studded door in a similar surround.
Internally, the building retains brick arched cellars. Barred windows on the dividing wall to the west, now blocked up, indicate that this was once an outside wall, suggesting that the Old Armoury is a later addition. The main part of the building has a four-bay open roof.
