Description
The Old Town Hall is a two-storey building constructed from rubble laid in courses of diminishing sizes, featuring a plinth and heavily tooled freestone dressings. It has a slate roof with end chimney stacks. Historical photographs indicate that there was once a raised clerestory at the center, and stone kneelers are present at the gable parapets. The building has multipane mullioned windows with architraves.
Facing Victoria Square, the front features a three-light window above the main entrance, which has a bracket-sided panel between it and a small panel above a boarded and studded door. On Berwyn Street, there are two windows to the left: a two-light window on the first floor and a barred window on the ground floor. Slightly set back is the Old Armoury, which has a single window with a stringcourse at the first floor level and a one-light small pane casement above a plain shop front. The Hall Street elevation is similar, with the one-window section also set back. It includes a two-light window on the ground floor and a studded door in a similar surround.
Internally, the building retains brick arched cellars. Barred windows on the dividing wall to the west, which are now blocked up, suggest that this was once an outside wall, indicating that the Old Armoury is a later addition. The main part of the building features a four-bay open roof.
