Description
The Old Smithy is a lofted house dating from the 18th century, constructed from white-painted rubble stonework and featuring a restored slate roof. A large chimney is located at the north end. The stonework of the north and south gables rises slightly above the roof plane and is uncoped, with projecting stones on the sides of the chimney stack indicating a previous thatched roof. The building includes modern joinery, such as a dormer window at the rear, and has an oven at the back with a flagstone roof, alongside an adjacent iron sheeted lean-to roof.
To the east elevation, there is a small service extension built with similar materials but featuring a lower eaves level, a brick end chimney, and modern doors and windows. A large, recently added west wing matches the style of the original house, with small-pane doors and windows, as well as dormers.
Attached to the north is the former smithy, which is a single-storey structure that has been refenestrated. It retains white-painted stonework and a low-pitch slate roof. An originally open-fronted bay at the north end of the smithy has been glazed to function as a sunroom. Additionally, a modern double garage block has been added at a right angle to the north end of the former smithy range.
Inside the house, there is a large hearth at the north gable end, and between the units, a timber-framed partition features one original doorway and one later doorway. In the former smithy, the remains of the original forge can still be seen, although it has mostly been rebuilt.
