Description

Tyddyn Llan is a substantial country house built in phases, comprising a symmetrical 3-window front range of one-and-a-half storeys as the original structure, with two parallel ranges added to the rear and a wing at right angles to the east, all of 2 storeys with attics. The buildings are constructed of random stone under slate roofs with wide boarded eaves and tall yellow brick stacks.

The front range displays a central gabled stone porch of finer quality stonework, probably added in the 19th century, which contains a round-arched doorway of stone voussoirs framing a half-glazed panelled door and fanlight. Above this doorway is a 3-over-3-pane sash window, with the gable rendered. The porch is flanked by 12-pane sashes with cambered stone heads, above which are gabled half dormers containing 3-over-6-pane sashes. The western gable end has a 6-pane sash window with a stone lintel offset to the left above a later addition, while the eastern gable end has a similar upper storey window offset to the right.

The western side shows the gable ends of the parallel rear ranges rising higher than the front range's gable. The central rear range has a 3-over-6-pane sash above a later addition, whilst the left-hand range has 12-pane sashes to both ground and first floors, with 2-light casements to the attic in both gables.

The eastern wing is flush with the east gable end of the front range and features a glazed door with small panes in a wider opening at its left end, with a 4-pane window to its right. To the right stands a large 3-light kitchen window with 20th-century small-pane glazing under a segmental head of high stone voussoirs, and a tall 2-light window at the right end. The upper storey has a 4-over-8-pane sash above the kitchen window, with 3-over-6-pane sashes to left and far right, and a narrow small-pane window to the left of the latter. A wide gabled dormer to the attic contains a 6-pane sash with skylights flanking it.

A single-storey games room adjoins the right of the front range, featuring a full-height canted bay window with flat roof offset to the right and 4-pane sash windows to its rear elevation. A gabled block with terrace was added further right in the late 20th century. A smaller single-storey block with hipped roof, of similar date, has been added to the left end of the front range with double doors flanked by windows. A large late 20th-century rear extension completes the complex.

Inside the porch is an arched doorway with half-glazed doors and a plain overlight, leading to a central stair-hall from which panelled doors open to left and right. The stairs, positioned to the left-hand side of the passage, curve towards the top and feature plain wooden balusters and a moulded handrail. Plastered archways to the rear of the passage lead to further rooms.

To the left is the lounge, where front and rear rooms have been made into one. This space displays moulded plastered ceiling beams with Classical-style panelled decoration, probably of the 18th century, with the spine beam supported on Ionic pilasters. A plain marble fireplace sits in an arched alcove at the south end, beneath which is plasterwork decorated with a circular emblem featuring an urn and cornucopia. To the right of the fireplace, former windows have been converted to wide flat archways leading into the extension.

To the right of the stair-hall is the bar, which features similar plastered ceiling beams supported on scrolled corbels, with a flat archway to the east leading into the former games room. The games room is 3 bays, half-ceiled and boarded, with wainscot panelling.
