Description

The Cottage at Garthydwr is a building featuring a main range and cross wing plan, dating from an unspecified period. It has a substantial chimney stack within the main range next to the cross wing, with the entrance located on the east elevation. The cross wing showcases exposed timber framing, characterized by box framing in square panels and some arch bracing. The rear gable wall has been refaced and rendered, although the original timber framed corner posts are still visible on either side. The long range is also rendered but is likely timber framed beneath. The building has slate roofs and a stone chimney stack.

The openings in both the long range and cross wing have been renewed, though they maintain the building's structural integrity. A blocked wood mullioned window with diamond mullions is still visible on the rear of the long range.

Inside, the cross wing is currently a single room but was previously divided into a heated main room and a narrow service room against the east gable end. Part of a post and panel partition remains behind the staircase, and the chamfered and stopped dividing beam is grooved for the former continuation of this partition. This beam supports a closed truss above, with the tie beam running above floor level interrupted by queen posts that form the newels of a doorway. Raking struts are present above the collar. The main room of the cross wing features a spine beam with ogee bar stops and chamfered joists, along with a side wall fireplace.

The two-unit hall range is now a single room, previously comprising a heated hall and an unheated outer unit. The fireplace in the inner wall has a chamfered and stopped cambered bressumer. This former hall has angled stops on the spine beam and joists, with two closely spaced parallel transverse beams. The outermost beam indicates an earlier division of the space, being grooved for a partition along most of its length, except at both ends, suggesting the presence of doorways. This division may have been a dais partition. A closed truss similar to that in the cross wing is located above this lateral division on the first floor.
