Description

Garthgynan Mill is a two-storey corn mill with a loft, constructed from a mix of brickwork and local axe-dressed limestone masonry, topped with a slate roof. It features a small chimney on the north gable and a water-wheel located at the south gable, with a short length of exposed tailrace on the east side.

The main elevation faces east and includes three equally spaced windows on both the ground and first floors. Each window consists of a pair of six-pane casements with limestone lintels but lacks masonry sills. There is also one similar pair of casements in each gable end. The north gable has two doors, with the left door being wider for sack carrying. At the rear (west) of the building, there is a later cartshed with a loft, which has a lower-pitched catslide roof. The waterwheel is of the high breastshot type, supplied by a high-level pipe from the west side. The axle shaft is made of timber, featuring a cast iron hub and rims, along with timber spokes, and is marked with the foundry name Turner and Jones, Ruabon.

Inside, the mill retains all its machinery, including three pairs of stones. The wheel shaft enters through the south wall and drives a pit-wheel, which in turn powers the main vertical shaft and spur-wheel that drives three stone nuts. There is a complete set of ancillary equipment for hoisting and handling grain and flour.

Stairs lead from the ground to the first floor along the east side wall, and additional stairs from the first floor to the loft are located against the north gable wall. The ground storey features a small fireplace built into the north wall. The roof structure consists of three bays with queen-posts and three purlins on each side, and the first floor is also designed in three bays.
