Description
Gales Wine Bar is a Georgian building dating from the 18th century. It has three storeys and a three-window whitewashed brick front, featuring painted stone quoins and a plinth. The roof is M-shaped and covered with slate, with red brick chimney stacks at each end and kneelers on the gable parapets. The eaves are boxed. The windows are almost flush frame sash types with marginal glazing bars, narrower in the center and featuring cambered heads on the first floor. The ground floor has an overall fascia with a dentilled cornice and end pilasters. To the left, there is a shop window with a splayed entrance and half-glazed doors, while to the right, there is a four-panel door accessed by steps, with additional sash windows beyond that are covered by blinds. The right end of the building has projecting chimney breasts. A modern extension is located at the rear. There is a fine Art Nouveau doorplate on the rear door, which is also present on the inner side.
Inside, the ground floor is largely wainscotted with panelling that was brought from Norfolk, found in both the bar/restaurant and the breakfast room. The main stairs feature a toads back handrail with turned balusters, and there are panelled and boarded doors throughout.
