Description

Brackenrigg is a house built in a free Domestic-revival style that combines elements of Arts and Crafts and Georgian architecture. It has one storey with an attic and basement, featuring whitened pebble-dashed walls and a steep tile roof that is hipped on the main range, with mansard roofs on the outer bays and tall brick stacks at the ends.

The front facade consists of three main bays that are nearly symmetrical. The central bay has an entrance that is offset to the left, accessed by an arc of stone steps. This Lutyens-like entrance features a brick surround with a round-headed doorway made up of four orders of brickwork, and double studded doors that include upper mullioned lights with patterned glazing. To the right of the entrance is a small-pane, two-light canted bay window. The outer bays are highlighted by prominent bow windows topped with domed roofs, which have small-pane iron-frame glazing beneath round heads. These are flanked by wooden Tuscan engaged columns that support a continuous architrave, with basement windows positioned below.

In the attic, there is a central raked roof dormer that contains a four-light mullioned and transomed small-pane window, complete with shutters. The outer bays also feature canted oriels in the attic, which have cross windows and small-pane glazing.

On the right side of the building, there is a full-height wall that conceals a one-storey projection and a small enclosed courtyard. The main range includes a boarded door leading to the kitchen and small-pane steel-frame windows, with a raked dormer situated above. The rear of the house showcases small-pane mullioned and transomed windows.
