Description
Kiln House at Melin Pen-y-gaer is a 19th-century building constructed from local rubble country stone, topped with a slate roof. It features a stone lintel above a ground floor boarded door, which is elevated to cart level on a platform accessed by steps. The upper level has small timber windows. To the east, there are pig sties, which are commonly associated with corn mills.
The structure consists of three parts, with the door leading into a central service bay flanked by kilns in the two end bays. Each kiln has a funnelled entrance to the heating chamber below its floor, made with perforated tiles. The upper part of the central bay includes a raking space with spouts that connect to the service bay below. Access to each kiln floor is provided by doors located at the ends of the building.
