Description

Christ Church is a late Perpendicular style church, likely dating from the 15th century. It is constructed from square cut, randomly coursed limestone with Helsby sandstone dressings and a green slate roof. The church comprises a nave with a narrow, lean-to south aisle, a gabled south porch with a doorway in its east wall, a massive tower over the crossing—which features shallow transepts to either side—and a chancel. The west window is of four lights, with three aisle windows each of four lights. Single lights are found in the transepts. A hollow chamfered arch provides access to the porch. The tower incorporates a small mullioned window to the south wall, a foiled lancet to the west, three square-headed louvred bell chamber lights, and an embattled parapet. A semi-octagonal stair turret is located on the northwest corner. The shallow sanctuary has two flat-headed, foiled windows to the south and a large five-light east window. Transepts are formed by an organ chamber to the south and a vestry to the north.

Inside, the nave has a very narrow corridor aisle to the south, and is divided into four bays with octagonal piers and double-chamfered arches. The roof is ornate, featuring hammerbeams, curved principal trusses with braced king posts to collar, and two tiers of wind braces. The curved principals and collar beams are richly carved. Segmental, plain, double-chamfered arches lead to both the choir, which forms the crossing beneath the tower, and to the organ loft to the south and the sanctuary. A low stone wall, carrying wrought iron screen and gables, incorporates the pulpit to the north, which has a stone corbelled base, octagonal design, openwork inscribed panels, and statues in niches. The interior also features an encaustic tiled floor, a flat panelled ceiling with tie beams carried on corbels, a richly worked organ case, wrought iron altar rails, an open-work wood traceried panelled altar, and a reredos with canopy and low reliefs. A sediliar and piscina are also present. The sanctuary roof has a keeled ceiling with a carved frieze. A font, of octagonal sandstone with low relief panels and lettering, is covered by a timber canopy. Original pews and choir stalls are retained, with carved panels in the bench ends.

The stained glass in the east window depicts the Last Supper with angels. The sanctuary’s north and south windows portray saints, while the west window depicts "suffer the little children". Other windows contain plain coloured glass.
