Description
11 Castle Street is a 1½-storey house with three windows, featuring cement rendered walls and a steep slate roof with a coped gable on the right side. The house has a restored stone stack to the left of the center, a 19th-century stone stack at the right end, and an original gable stack on the higher rear wing. There is also a small brick stack on the right side of the rear roof slope, which is not visible from the front.
The central entrance consists of a boarded door with strap hinges, topped by a gabled canopy that partially obscures an original stone tablet inscribed with '1589 JB E' in raised letters and numerals. A large central gabled dormer features a pair of small 4-pane sash windows. The entrance is flanked by projecting gables that are set back from the ends, likely added in the 18th century. These gables have windows that are boarded up on the lower storey (originally for sashes) and 12-pane horned sash windows in the attic, along with bargeboards that have pendant finials. To the left, there is a passage with double doors and boarding up to the eaves, which has a replacement door in an earlier opening.
At the back of the main range, there is a 2-storey gabled projection with two windows: 16-pane hornless sashes on the first floor, a 4-pane horned sash window on the lower right, and the lower left window has had its glazing removed. The roof of the main range has a new roof dormer over the passage.
The side wall of the rear wing, which faces the courtyard of the Bluebell Inn, has a blocked door on the lower storey and a blocked window above. A later 1-storey projection is attached to the gable end. The rear wing, facing the yard, has 4-pane sash windows, and the lower projection features boarded door and window openings on each storey, with the upper storey openings enlarged.
Although not inspected, a survey by RCAHM Wales from around 1950 and a previous listing survey from 1975 noted an original joist-beam ceiling in the left-hand room. The layout, which includes a central passage, is later and features an 18th or 19th-century staircase at the rear of the passage, complete with turned balusters.
