Description

This is a pair of mid-19th century shops with houses situated above them, forming part of a group of buildings at 7-9 Castle Street. The building is three storeys high and has a facade of 2 bays on the left and 3 bays on the right. It is built of whitened scribed roughcast with black-painted, rusticated rock-faced quoins, and has a slate roof with projecting dentil eaves. There is a whitened scribed roughcast stack to the right, a white roughcast stack to the left of centre, and a grey roughcast stack at the left end. The lower storey is occupied by shop fronts. The upper windows have black-painted keyed architraves, cornices on consoles in the middle storey, and a sill band. A modern three-light shop window and double-glazed door are located to the left. A replacement glazed door provides access to the house on the right, and the fascia is modern. The first bay features a double-height oriel window with small-pane glazing to two-light casements, replacing original sash windows. The second bay has similar glazing to a window that is slightly shorter than the sashes it replaced.

The rear elevation consists of whitened render with a projecting three-storey gabled bay, offset to the left of centre. This section has replacement windows and two large, added gabled roof dormers. The building has been modernised.
