Description
Wern Isaf, formerly known as Rose Briars, is a two-storey building featuring a three-sided gabled front that is dry-dash rendered, facing a terraced garden. The slate roofs do not have bargeboards and have flush eaves, with brick stacks located towards the centre of the roof and on the cat-slide outer slopes. On the left side, there is a sloping dormer head, and on the right, a small added dormer with lattice glazing. The upper floor has paired narrow lights with tall 8-pane timber sashes, while the ground floor features triple windows with paired small pane casements and a centrally located pointed glazed door, which has slated steps leading down to it.
On the southern side, there is a single-storey hipped domestic range that faces the hillside, characterized by oversailing eaves and an end stack. The entrance front has a "Butterfly Plan" design with a hipped roof over a long small-pane landing window and tiled facings. The recessed doorway is situated under a timber bressumer that bears the incised date "1900" and the monogram "HLN." The door is studded, retains its original metal fittings, and features diagonal bracing on the inside.
The interior of the building is remarkably complete and showcases an inventive spacious plan that remains unaltered from the original designs by North. The polygonal entrance hall has rooms radiating off the ground floor, and there is a cantilevered landing and staircase with Arts and Crafts timber handrails and newels. The hall features a tiled floor and an angled chimney surround. To the left, there is a cloakroom that serves as a family bookroom.
An exceptional canted suite of three intercommunicating public rooms is located within the garden front, with glazing bars in the dividers. The ceilings are beamed, and there are wooden shutters with punched decoration and strapwork hinges, along with low seats in the splays, timber sills, and valences. The doors are dramatic 6-panelled designs. An Islamic style design is present in the outward curving overmantel with a tiled chimney surround. The bedroom floor exhibits a similar treatment, featuring a polygonal plan form, small Arts and Crafts chimney pieces, and battened doors, with beams across the ceiling groins.
