Description

The garden walls, terraces, potting shed, and peach house at Voelas are notable features of the kitchen garden. The walls are constructed from rubble stonework, with part of the inner side faced in brick. They form a rectangle that opens to the south, bordered by the river. Access to the garden is available from a pathway around the 'bothy' and through the buildings in the service yard. The walls stand approximately 3 meters high and are capped. A later opening has been created on the eastern side.

The upper terrace features a central square recess with steps leading down to a raised walkway, and a perron staircase that descends further to a randomly paved crosswalk on the third terrace. Additional steps from this level lead down to the main garden area, which is enhanced with cross hedging.

The peach house is located against the eastern end of the upper (northern) wall. It consists of lightweight T-section ferrous members, approximately 40x40mm, that curve from a timber lower section, which can be opened, set on a low brick wall, to a higher level against the northern wall. Each member's leg has regular piercings for a continuous 3-4mm wire, to which thin glass panes, shaped with a curved profile at the lower edge, are attached using metal clips.

Additionally, a stone-built potting shed is integrated into the bank on the outer side of the walled garden. It features a hipped slate roof, two ridge stacks, and a central louvred ventilator, along with boarded end doors. The southern wall of the potting shed is part of the northern garden wall.
