Description
The building at Voelas, which includes a laundry, stable, and bothy, dates from the 19th century. It is constructed of rendered stone and features slate roofs with crested ridges, including a hipped ventilated saddleback section over the laundry. The structure is one storey high with attic accommodation. On the ground floor, facing the terrace, there is a lean-to verandah supported by bracketed timber posts, and it has a boarded door. The upper floor is illuminated by windows in two steeply gabled raised dormers.
At the southern end, the bothy is built of squared rubble and forms a quadrant on plan, connecting to the southern range of the stables. It has three 2-light windows and a dentilled cornice. Inside the verandah, there is the Brochmael Stone, which was discovered in 1821 in an early-Christian cemetery during roadworks by Telford. This stone is secured to the wall with metal cramps and is scheduled as an Ancient Monument under its proper name, the Brohomagli Stone.
The rear of the building features two similar raised dormers with timber casement windows, along with two smaller windows on the ground floor and two carriage houses that have been converted into garages.
