Description

Voelas is a two-storey stone house with smooth rendering and two parallel ranges of hipped slate roofs. The main front, facing south over the valley, features nine bays, with the central three bays projecting forward and topped with a pediment in an early 18th-century style. The ground floor has fifteen-paned sash windows, while the upper floor has twelve-paned sash windows. A central doorcase with an architrave is topped with a tall scrolled open pediment, displaying the initials of the owner's wife, Alice. The door is glazed, and the pediment features a draped family shield.

The west elevation of the picture gallery mirrors the main front but is perhaps better proportioned, consisting of five bays. It includes a glazed door set in a pilastered doorcase beneath a scrolled pediment, with the initials TCWF. The entrance elevation at the rear has a main glazed screen and door leading to the hallway, sheltered by a flat canopy supported by scrolled ironwork brackets. To the right, there is a coat of arms from the previous family house at Hen Voelas, and to the left, two very tall paned windows, eleven panes high, illuminate the staircase. The east elevation features two tripartite twelve-pane sash windows on the ground floor, and a wall encloses the east garden from the north, extending to the summer house and outbuildings.

Entering from the north leads to an impressive and spacious stair hall. The main reception rooms are located along the south front, while the service areas are on the east, with the kitchen situated in the southeast corner. The west side is entirely occupied by the picture gallery, which is connected in an en-filade arrangement to the drawing room. Both the small and large drawing rooms, as well as the hallway, showcase exquisite 18th-century Corinthian doorcases embellished with gold, along with remarkable chimney pieces made from various marbles reclaimed from Lindsey House in Chelsea, London. The doors are mahogany panelled. A free-standing dog-leg staircase ascends to a sitting area on the half-landing, which features a fine 18th-century pedimented bookcase, with a replica facing it. The picture gallery is one and a half storeys high, achieved by raising the upper floor at this end, a design reportedly inspired by Uppark. It includes a fine baroque chimney piece with a framed painting.
