Description

The Gwrych Estate Boundary Wall, dating from the 19th century, is a long stretch of estate boundary wall that runs alongside Abergele Road for approximately 0.5 kilometers. It is constructed of local limestone rubble. The wall begins at the junction of Abergele Road and Rhyd-y-Foel Road, curving around to follow Rhyd-y-Foel Road for about 12 meters, where it continues beyond a masonry break as a later rubble wall. The main section of the wall borders Abergele Road. At the start, there is an inset sandstone milestone with a weathered inscription that reads: '(?) - Llanddulas/ St. Asaph - Conway/ Chester - Bangor/ London - Ireland'. The wall is around 4.5 meters high at this point and extends for about 25 meters before stepping down by one meter and continuing for another 25 meters. In the center of this section, there is a pointed-arched entrance and a splayed 'arrow-slit' to the right. The wall steps down again and runs for roughly 150 meters at a height of 2 meters, with a further blocked slit light in the center. It then steps up in four stages of 25 meters each before slightly advancing and continuing for another 50 meters as a simply-crenellated wall. The structure ends in a much-overgrown corner turret.
