Description

The lychgate at St Cynbryd's Church is a timber-framed structure designed in the Arts and Crafts style, inspired by early Tudor architecture. It stands on a stone base made of polygonal ashlar with gently-battered sides and a chamfered sandstone capping. The oak superstructure features a gabled design with two bays and has projecting pegs throughout. The entrance sides and centre include spere trusses, which have moulded chamfers with ogee stops, tapering slightly towards the top and bowing gently at the bottom.

Near-flat segmental tie-beams are also moulded, supporting open heavy framed trusses and outer walls. The purlins are hollow-chamfered, and the windbraces are cusped, extending into particularly deep verges where the wall-plate ends are moulded. The lychgate has simple bargeboards with moulded edges and oversailing, along with feathered eaves that show expressed rafter ends. The roof is covered with slate and has cement ridge tiles that have been replaced.

On the north tie beam, which faces the church, there is a carved inscription that reads 'Erected in memory of a dear mother by Alfred L Jones, 1899'. Additionally, there is a Welsh inscription in raised, polychromed lettering on the south tie beam, which faces the front. Above this, within the framed truss, is a central niched oak carving of St. Cynbryd. The lychgate features a pair of contemporary oak half-gates at the central spere truss, each consisting of eight panels, with the upper four being open. The gates have simple ironwork and the floor is made of red brick.
