Description

The National Westminster Bank is a single-storey building constructed from ashlar sandstone, topped with a slated roof. It features a symmetrical front facing Market Street, characterized by heavy rusticated quoins and a central door framed by a Gibbsian surround, which includes a stepped keystone, a pulvinating frieze, and a cornice. Above this, there is a prominent sculpted swag. Flanking the door are tall cross windows with leaded panes set in timber frames, also surrounded by similar Gibbsian detailing. The frieze at the top of the elevation, which originally had applied lettering, is topped with a cornice and a balustered parapet of three bays that conceals the hipped roof. The elevation on Church Street mirrors this design, featuring two windows and a two-bay balustraded parapet that extends approximately one meter at the rear.

Inside, the banking hall is spacious and dignified, with a panelled dado and bolection moulded panelling that rises to a narrow cornice and a coved ceiling.
