Description
Llanrhos Church Hall and Church House is a 19th-century school building with projecting two-storey hipped wings at each end, forming a shallow H-shape. The building is constructed of rubble stone with a slate roof. Openings feature freestone segmental heads and drip stones, with pronounced keystones to the front elevation. The three-bay central range has a former doorway, now a small-paned window, in the gabled central bay. Above this is a round clock, made by English Clock Systems of London, housed under a gabled bellcote with a single bell. Windows to the right and left of the central range have 16-pane horned sashes under flat arches.
The right-hand (north) wing has a central porch, now missing its original battlements. The porch contains a segmental-pointed entrance, benches to the inner walls, and a fielded-panel door. It is flanked by 12-pane hornless sash windows under cambered heads, with another similar window on the first floor. The left-hand (south) wing, which incorporates the original Church House, has similar window arrangements, although the windows are now replacement top-hung casements. This wing’s porch retains its castellated parapet, pointed arch, and benches, but the original door has been blocked and plastered over.
The left-hand end wall of Church House incorporates an inserted doorway, in a pebble-dashed surround, to the right of centre, with a fielded-panel door below a boarded-over overlight. Camber-headed windows are replacement top-hung casements set in original openings. Church House has two inserted windows on its rear elevation, and a later lean-to addition to the side wall facing the rear of the central range. The right end wall was originally double-fronted, but the original central doorway has been converted into a small-paned window, flanked by 12-pane hornless sash windows on the ground floor, and shorter 9-pane sashes on the first floor, all under segmental heads. The north wing has an added rear lean-to with a boarded door and a pivoting window in the side wall.
The rear elevation features a lower, hipped-roof projection added to the central range. A first-floor window with 16 panes and hornless glazing is visible on its right side, belonging to the school room. The corresponding left-hand window has replacement small-paned glazing and a raised sill above an added lean-to addition.
