Description
The churchyard walls, lych gate, and railings enclose the Mostyn burial ground surrounding Llanrhos church. The rubble-stone lych gate dates to the 18th century and has a slate roof behind a coped freestone gable. The entrances are framed by segmental arches with voussoirs. A contemporary iron gate with spear finials to broad main and dog bars stands on the south side; the gate standards are topped with cast iron urn finials. Inside the lych gate, the walls are pebble-dashed and fitted with wooden benches. Stone and slate steps leading to a mounting block are located abutting the west side of the lych gate.
The churchyard wall is constructed of rubble stone. It extends across the west side of the churchyard, facing Conway Road, and incorporates a central recessed entrance with monolithic gate piers and double gates similar in style to the lych gate. Only the left-hand standard of this gate retains an urn finial. A flat-roofed shed has been built on the northwest corner, near the former site of the Queen’s Head pub. The wall continues along the north side of the original churchyard, now extended on the other side, and ends opposite the end of the chancel.
Extending east from the lych gate, the wall bounds the south side of the churchyard. Here, another wrought-iron gate, similar in style to the lych gate and retaining an urn finial on its right-hand standard, provides access. Beyond this gate is a later wall extension, indicated by a vertical joint, which returns on the east side of the churchyard. The east wall is stepped out at the northeast end around the Mostyn burial ground. Within the burial ground, the inner side is enclosed by iron railings set in nine bays, with bays 2-4 projecting forward. The cast iron railings feature cusped arcading, including inverted lower arches, and fleur-de-lis finials. The octagonal standards have diagonal buttresses and pyramidal caps rising from castellated capitals. Bays 3 and 5 incorporate double gates of matching design, each featuring a rectangular panel with the monogram 'M' in archaic lettering.
The church of St Hilary, the churchyard walls, lych gate, south and west gates to the churchyard, the railings enclosing the Mostyn burial ground, the mounting block southwest of the lych gate, and the wall on the eastern and south-eastern sides of the car park south of the churchyard (including a drinking fountain and gate) form a group of buildings of group value.
