Description

Llanrhos Church Hall and Church House is a late 19th-century school with a shallow "H" shape, incorporating Church House on the left. It is constructed of rubble stone with a slate roof. The front elevation features openings with freestone segmental heads and drip stones, accentuated by pronounced keystones. The central three-bay range has a former segmental-pointed doorway in the gabled central bay, now a small-pane window. Above it is a round clock by English Clock Systems of London, set beneath a gabled bellcote with a single bell. Windows to the right and left have 16-pane horned sashes under flat arches.

The right-hand (north) wing has a central porch, missing its original battlements. It features a segmental-pointed entrance, benches to the inner walls, and a fielded-panel door. It is flanked by 12-pane hornless sash windows under cambered heads, with a similar central first-floor window above. The left-hand (south) wing (Church House) has similar fenestration with replacement top-hung casements. Its porch retains its castellated parapet, pointed arch, and benches, but the original door has been blocked and plastered over.

The left end wall of Church House has an inserted doorway, within a pebble-dashed surround, to the right of centre. This doorway has a fielded-panel door below an overlight that has been boarded up. Camber-headed windows are replacement top-hung casements in original openings. Church House includes two inserted windows to the rear elevation and an added lean-to in the side wall facing the rear of the central range. The right end wall was originally double-fronted; the central doorway has been converted to a small-pane window flanked by 12-pane hornless sash windows on the ground floor and shorter 9-pane sashes on the first floor, all under segmental heads. The north wing features an added rear lean-to with a boarded door and a pivoting window in the side wall.

A lower, one-storey hipped-roof projection has been added to the rear of the central range. On its right side is an original 16-pane hornless sash window to the school room. The corresponding left-hand window has replacement small-pane glazing and a raised sill above an added lean-to.

Internally, the school room has been altered and includes a late 19th-century roof with king-post trusses and raking struts. It retains a central rear lateral fireplace with later detailing, and boarded wainscot.
