Description

The building is an early 20th century electricity booster station, established in Maenofferen in 1911 alongside a hydro-electric power station. This booster station converts power from direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC) and remains in use as of June 1995.

The exterior features a slate-built, single-storey structure divided into two sections, with the southern section stepped down from the northern one. There is weather-coursing at their intersection, along with oversailing eaves and deep verges. A tall loading bay is located on the northern gable end, equipped with a crane arm above. The right side has boarded double doors, while the western side is partly slate-hung with a boarded door and blocked window openings, as well as a further window that was formerly an entrance.

Inside, the northern section serves as the turbine room and retains its original machinery and switch gear. The southern section is used for storage and as a lamp room. Early 20th century Mine Act notices are displayed on the walls, along with a Coronation flag from 1953.

This booster station is a well-preserved example of early 20th century technology, with its machinery intact and still operational. It holds group value with other listed items at Maenofferen, representing an exceptionally complete example of a slate quarry level.
