Description

The hydro-electric power station was constructed in 1911 as part of the electrification of Maenofferen quarry, designed specifically for its use. It is supplied from Llyn Bowydd and Llyn Newydd via pipes and remains operational, with much of its machinery still intact.

The exterior features a square building made of slate rubble, topped with a half-hipped slate roof to the south. It has plain bargeboards and deep verges on the north gable, along with a small tin louvre at the roof apex. The west face includes a boarded entrance door and an unglazed window opening to the left. A plain yellow brick chimney projects from the southwest corner, accompanied by a low brick wall at the front. At the rear, there is an upper loading bay with a cast-iron pipe entry point and boarded doors. The north gable has various blocked and disturbed openings, partly related to the adjacent ruined engine house.

Inside, there is a raised platform to the east featuring a central rail incline and pipework. The building has a three-bay king post roof with a gantry crane. Notable machinery includes a Gilkes of Kendal turbine dated 1927 and a direct current generator by British-Thompson-Houston Co, along with switch gear also by B.T. H.

This power station is listed as an exceptionally rare example of a hydro-electric facility with largely intact machinery.
