Description

Eldon Row is a three-storey terrace consisting of five houses, with two windows in most and one window in one. The building is constructed from coursed squared rubble and features steeply pitched slate roofs with close verges and a cavetto eaves cornice. There are six stone stacks and water tabling.

The second-floor windows have shallow upper sashes with 16 panes, set under the eaves. The first and third vertical glazing bars are somewhat thicker, creating a tripartite effect. These windows have stone sills. The first floor has similar 20-pane windows with deep stone lintels, and there is a continuous sill band that is broken over No. 3. The windows of No. 6, located at the extreme right of the terrace, have later glazing bars.

No. 4 features a largely original shopfront with a central shop window, a plain entablature, fielded panelled pilasters, and stone stallrisers, although it has a modern 20-pane window. To each side of the central window are sunk panelled doorcases. There is a rectangular fanlight with lattice glazing above a six flush panel door to the left, and panelled internal splays. To the right side, there is a modern glazed door under a plain rectangular fanlight, with stone steps leading down to the street.

No. 2 has similar pilasters and a later 19th-century butcher's shop window with a moulded cornice, a blind box, and tiled stallrisers. The doorways have plain rectangular fanlights and six flush panel doors, with panelled internal splays. Nos. 1 and 3 have broad modern shopfronts, while No. 5 retains its original layout but has modern fittings, with a six flush panelled door surviving on the left.

In the centre of No. 6, there is a window above a cellar opening, with a doorway to the left that has a modern door. To the right, a former doorway has been converted into a window, with shutter pintles still visible.

A commemorative slate tablet located at the centre of the terrace reads: "AD 1830. ELDON ROW. The first stone of this building was laid on the anniversary of the Ven'able Earl's Birthday to mark respect for him. Sir R W V." The first-floor sill band extends across the northern gable end.
