Description
Eldon Row is a three-storey terrace of six houses, built in 1830. The houses are constructed of coursed squared rubble with steeply pitched slate roofs, close verges, and a cavetto eaves cornice. The terrace features six stone stacks with water tabling. The windows on the left side (Nos 1 and 3) have broad, modern shopfronts. Nos 1 and 3 retain the original layout but have modern fittings. No. 2 has a later 19th-century butcher’s shop window with a moulded cornice, blind box, and tiled stallrisers. No. 4 retains a largely original shopfront with a central window, plain entablature, fielded panelled pilasters, stone stallrisers, and modern 20-pane window. Flanking the shopfront are sunk panelled doorcases; the doorway on the left has a rectangular fanlight with lattice glazing over a six-panel door, featuring panelled internal splays. The doorway on the right has a modern glazed door and plain rectangular fanlight, with stone steps leading down to the street. No. 5 has a surviving six-panelled door to the left, with modern fittings. No. 6, at the extreme right, has later glazing bars to its windows. The upper floor windows are shallow sashes with 16 panes, set under the eaves; the first and third vertical glazing bars are slightly thicker, creating a tripartite effect. Similar 20-pane windows are present on the first floor. All windows have stone sills. A continuous sill band runs along the facade, broken over No. 3 and carried across the north gable end. A window is positioned centrally in No. 6 above a cellar opening, alongside a doorway and a modern door. A former doorway is now a window to the right, with shutter pintles still in place. A commemorative slate tablet is centrally located on the terrace, reading: "AD 1830. ELDON ROW. The first stone of this building was laid on the anniversary of the Ven'able Earl's Birthday to mark respect for him. Sir R W V."
