Description
Eldon Row is a three-storey terrace consisting of five houses, with two windows in most and one window in one. The buildings are constructed from coursed squared rubble and feature steeply pitched slate roofs with close verges and a cavetto eaves cornice. There are six stone stacks and water tabling.
The second-floor windows have shallow upper sashes with 16 panes, set under the eaves. The first and third vertical glazing bars are somewhat thicker, creating a tripartite effect. These windows have stone sills. The first floor features similar 20-pane windows with deep stone lintels, and there is a continuous sill band, which is broken over house number 3. House number 6, at the extreme right of the terrace, has later glazing bars on its windows.
House number 4 retains a largely original shopfront, which includes a central shop window with a plain entablature, fielded panelled pilasters, and stone stallrisers, although it has a modern 20-pane window. There are sunk panelled doorcases on either side, with a rectangular fanlight featuring lattice glazing above a six flush panel door to the left. The right side has a modern glazed door under a plain rectangular fanlight, and there are stone steps leading down to the street.
House number 2 has similar pilasters but features a later 19th-century butcher's shop window with a moulded cornice, a blind box, and tiled stallrisers. The doorways have plain rectangular fanlights above six flush panel doors and panelled internal splays. Houses 1 and 3 have broad modern shopfronts, while house number 5 retains its original layout but has modern fittings, with a six flush panelled door surviving on the left.
House number 6 has a window at the centre over a cellar opening, with a doorway to the left that has a modern door. The former doorway to the right has been converted into a window, with shutter pintles still visible.
A commemorative slate tablet in the centre of the terrace reads: "AD 1830. ELDON ROW. The first stone of this building was laid on the anniversary of the Ven'able Earl's Birthday to mark respect for him. Sir R W V." The first-floor sill band continues across the northern gable end.
