Description
Eldon Row is a three-storey terrace consisting of five houses, featuring two windows for most and one window for the end house. The building is constructed from coursed squared rubble and has steeply pitched slate roofs with close verges and a cavetto eaves cornice. There are six stone stacks and water tabling present.
The second-floor windows have shallow upper sashes with 16 panes, set under the eaves. The first and third vertical glazing bars are somewhat thicker, creating a tripartite effect. These windows also have stone sills. The first floor features similar 20-pane windows with deep stone lintels. A continuous sill band runs across the terrace, although it is broken over No. 3. The windows of No. 6, located at the extreme right of the terrace, have later glazing bars.
No. 4 has a largely original shopfront, which includes a central shop window with a plain entablature, fielded panelled pilasters, stone stallrisers, and a modern 20-pane window. On either side of the shop window are sunk panelled doorcases. To the left, there is a rectangular fanlight with lattice glazing above a six flush panel door. The internal splays are panelled. To the right, there is a modern glazed door under a plain rectangular fanlight, with stone steps leading down to the street.
No. 2 features similar pilasters and a later 19th-century butcher's shop window, complete with a moulded cornice, blind box, and tiled stallrisers. The doorways have plain rectangular fanlights and six flush panel doors, with panelled internal splays.
Nos. 1 and 3 have broad modern shopfronts, while No. 5 retains the original layout but has modern fittings; however, the six flush panelled door remains on the left.
No. 6 has a window above a cellar opening, with a doorway to the left featuring a modern door. The former doorway to the right has been converted into a window, with shutter pintles still visible.
A commemorative slate tablet in the centre of the terrace reads: "AD 1830. ELDON ROW. The first stone of this building was laid on the anniversary of the Ven'able Earl's Birthday to mark respect for him. Sir R W V." The first-floor sill band continues across the north gable end.
