Description

The Church of St. Gwawr is a small rural church that features a continuous nave and chancel, along with a south porch and a west bellcote. It is constructed from roughly coursed local stone and has a slate roof adorned with ornate ridge tiles and rendered copings at the west gable. The masonry shows variations, with much of the north and south walls being of a single build, indicating that the eavesline was raised, likely in the 19th century. The west ends of both walls are less regular, and there are blocked openings visible in the north wall, including a doorway at the west end and a window to the east. The east gable wall clearly shows how the roofline was raised, while the west wall is heavily rendered. Large stones are noticeable at the base of the walls and as quoins and lintels, with freestone dressings around the east gable window. All windows feature 19th-century timber frames; the east window has three trefoil-headed lights in a pointed arched frame, and the lateral walls have paired trefoil-headed lights in square-headed windows, likely from the 18th century. A stone above the central window in the south wall is dated 1773. The porch includes a pointed arched outer doorway made of narrow voussoirs, with the keystone dated 1866; the inner doorway has a boarded door with broad hinges.

Inside, the church has an exposed roof with four bays supported by arch-braced collared trusses that extend down to wall posts on shaped corbels. The fittings are from the 19th century, but the font's pillar and base date back to the 15th century, and the bowl may be even older. The east window features a depiction of St. Gwawr, while the easternmost window in the south wall depicts St. Margaret.
